About Us Since 2001, the Faculty of Computer Science recognized the importance of developing its expertise in information and network security and established the network and information security (NIS) research group and Network Security Laboratory (NSL). Information Security Centre of Excellence is being created in collaboration with the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Q1Labs Inc. as the Centre’s first industrial partner. This partnership has the potential to expand and include other interested parties in the near future. The centre is envisaged as a broad based unit having both an education and research mandate. The ultimate goal to build on this base and contribute to the establishment of a UNB-based Canada-wide Institute for Advanced Studies of Privacy, Security and Trust (PST). The Centre will develop and support highly specialized educational programs and conduct research to create technological capabilities in the area of information and network security and to improve the competitiveness of New Brunswick’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. The research and development activities of the Centre will be interdisciplinary, so, in the future, the involvement and contributions of faculty from Arts, Business Administration, Engineering, Science and researchers from NRC-IIT are expected. The Centre’s first project in the area of Intrusion Detection/Prevention has received funding from ACOA through a grant from the Atlantic Innovation Fund (AIF). The centre currently consists of 2 professors, 2 adjunct professors, 2 postdoctoral fellows, 2 PhD students, 4 Master’s students, one full-time developer and 3 consultants from Q1Labs. Our Vision With the establishment of the ISCX, the Faculty of Computer Science at UNB has the opportunity to become recognized as one of the leading institutions in the area of information and communication security. The ISCX provides a unique opportunity for the Faculty to:
Increase its teaching and research expertise in this area;
Fundamentally alter the educational experience of graduate and undergraduate students;
Demonstrate a new model of cooperation between UNB, Government and the Private Sector; and,
Contribute to the economic development of New Brunswick.
The resources provided by the ISCX will enable the Faculty of Computer Science to:
Establish a formal research institute at UNB in the area of privacy, security and trust
Introduce a new area of expertise in its graduate program; and,
Develop a new undergraduate major in security.
